Protection of a vital natural resource

Groundwater is one of Australia’s most important natural resources.

Groundwater is a critical source of drinking water for many cities and towns. Groundwater also supports irrigation, agriculture and industry in vast parts of Australia. It also feeds into the flow of many rivers, helping maintain surface water.

Managing and maintaining this critical resource is important. The complex interactions of many different factors can have far-reaching impacts on water quality or quantity.

Our expert team of hydrogeologists, scientists and engineers help our clients with the assessment and management of groundwater supplies and resources across Australia.

Our work includes thorough assessments of groundwater resources.  We design solutions to help manage flows and improve water quality. We also help clients meet their legislative responsibilities in managing groundwater.

Water Technology work with government, industry and the private sector to deliver cost effective outcomes that enable confident, evidence-based decision making backed by credible science.

Together, we provide cutting-edge solutions and robust strategies to manage risk.

Water Technology has a team of 15 hydrogeologists, scientists and field technicians across Australia who can help with the assessment and management of groundwater systems.

Our Expert Approach to Groundwater Challenges:

Groundwater Modelling

The Water Technology groundwater modelling team are highly regarded for delivering best-practice, scientifically defensible model outcomes to support licencing applications and approvals, water supply planning, impact assessment and resource allocation and management.

Our team have extensive experience in the conceptualisation, design, parameterisation and calibration of groundwater flow and solute transport models. These models range in scale and complexity from analytical models, localised, 2-D slices adjacent rivers and through mine tailings storage facilities, up to 3-D basin-scale models for the assessment of regional, multi-layered aquifer systems, and density-dependent solute transport models.

We have a niche capability in the use of stochastic modelling techniques to characterise heterogeneity and facilitate risk-based decision-making using quantitative uncertainty analysis. We regularly develop customised tools to assist clients with optimisation of their groundwater operations and management decisions.

Our team regularly act as an independent peer reviewers of groundwater modelling studies for State and Commonwealth government departments.

Regional and Remote Water Supply

Water Technology provide reliable, fit‑for‑purpose groundwater supply solutions in regional and remote environments.  Our team of hydrogeologists support communities, pastoral operations, resource and infrastructure projects with end‑to‑end groundwater expertise — including bore audits, bore integrity assessments, resource exploration, drilling supervision, bore construction QA/QC, monitoring and aquifer testing.

By integrating robust field data with practical hydrogeological insight, we can identify reliable groundwater supplies, protect water quality, deliver risk‑informed water supply strategies that optimise performance and provide resilient, long‑term outcomes in challenging, data‑limited settings.

Monitoring and Investigation

We deliver practical, defensible groundwater monitoring and investigation programs for water resource management, environmental approvals, operational compliance and mine closure.

Our team has extensive experience developing monitoring plans, designing and reviewing groundwater monitoring networks, and delivering field programs across remote, complex and highly regulated sites. We deliver targeted groundwater sampling and hydrochemical assessment programs, including environmental tracer studies to understand recharge processes, groundwater residence time, flow pathways, aquifer connectivity and potential contaminant sources. We use fit-for-purpose field methods and QA/QC systems to ensure data are reliable, representative and suitable for decision-making.

By combining strong hydrogeological interpretation with high-quality monitoring data, we help clients understand system behaviour, identify emerging risks, demonstrate compliance and support long-term groundwater management.

Groundwater Sustainability and Management

Water Technology apply a range of contemporary methods and cutting-edge tools to identify, characterise and quantify groundwater resources. By understanding and measuring key components of the water balance, and their intrinsic relationships to water quality, we have proven methods to estimate sustainable extraction limits at scales ranging from individual wells to borefields and entire groundwater basins. This in turn enables purposeful planning of groundwater management, ranging from local abstraction rules to jurisdictional water allocation plans.

Licencing and Approvals

Based on our team’s diverse professional experience working for State and Commonwealth governments, coupled with dedication to delivering defensible scientific outcomes, we routinely work at the interface between clients and regulators to obtain complex approvals and water licences.

As regulatory expectations increase, proponents across many industries are being asked to demonstrate a clear understanding of potential groundwater impacts, management requirements and monitoring obligations.

Water Technology supports clients across urban development, renewable energy, wastewater infrastructure, mining, industrial operations and water supply projects, providing the hydrogeological assessments, technical advice and regulatory support needed to progress approvals with confidence.

Our work includes groundwater impact assessments, licence applications and renewals, monitoring and management plans, regulator liaison, peer review and responses to technical information requests.

Our team of technical experts work across a range of specialities, ensuring our recommendations are robust and cross-disciplinary.
